Thomas "Tom" Hutchison, affectionately known to many as Papa, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at the age of 75. Tom was born October 11, 1950 in Pekin, Illinois to Elwood Joseph Hutchison and Lois Mae Hellman Hutchison. He was one of six children.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean Johnson Hutchison, his parents and his brothers, Lonnie Hutchison, Max Hutchison, Steve Hutchison and granddaughter, Lily Rae LeFebvre.

He is survived by his children, Sheila (Steve) Koonce, Rachael (Justin) Bailes, Thomas (Mandi) Hutchison, Ivy (Nathan) Roth, Shanna (Dan) LeFebvre, his 12 grandchildren, his 9 great-grandchildren, his brother, Michael Hutchison and his sister, Sue Hutchison Germain.

In 1959 Tom's family relocated to Tucson, Arizona where he grew up and graduated from Rincon High School. He later attended Cochise College, studying forestry before beginning his career in the mining industry.

In 1970 Tom married Kathleen Critchley and together they welcomed four children: Sheila, Rachael, Thomas and Ivy. He spent many years working at the Copper Mines near Tucson providing for his young family while developing the skills and work ethic that would serve him throughout his life.

In 1987 Tom married Jean C. Johnson, gaining a daughter, Shanna. Together they shared a love of homesteading and purchased land along the Blue River in Eastern Arizona. Tom retired in his mid-40s and they built the life Tom had always dreamed of. With his own two hands Tom built their cabin and barn; creating not just a home, but a place where he could live the simple, self-sufficient life he had always imagined.

Tom found his greatest joy living close to the land. A gifted craftsman, Tom could build or repair nearly anything. Whether working construction along the river, hunting in the mountains, serving as a camp cook on hunting expeditions or exploring the countryside on foot or horseback, he was happiest outside, surrounded by the beauty of nature.

Though naturally quiet and content with a peaceful life, Tom welcomed friends and family with genuine warmth. He loved sharing his knowledge of gardening, homesteading and living off the land with anyone who visited. He never sought the spotlight, but those fortunate enough to spend time with him always felt loved. He was known for giving the very best hugs and for greeting each day with his familiar saying, "It's another beautiful day in paradise!"

Tom's legacy lives on in the family he loved, the lessons he shared and the peaceful life he built along the Blue River. He will be deeply missed by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
