Randolph “Randy” Patterson Platt passed away, Friday,August 22, 2025 at the age of 73 after an incredibly brave battle with lung cancer.
Randy was born on June 19, 1952 in McNary, Arizona to Josephine Patterson and William Lester Platt; the fifth of five children. He was raised in St. Johns, Arizona where he lived an idyllic childhood with the love and support of a large extended family.
He loved the summers he spent working on his brother, Rodney’s farm in Bowie, Arizona and Uncle Rob Roy’s cattle ranch in St. Johns where he learned a work ethic that never stopped even when his cancer set in.
Randy was musically gifted, playing the piano masterfully and earning a full ride scholarship to NAU after high school to play the trombone in the jazz band. His beautiful tenor voice and melodic whistling will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to hear them.
After serving from 1971-1973 in the France-Belgium mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Randy returned to St. Johns. He began dating the beautiful Laurie Day and the two were married on June 6, 1975.
Randy studied dentistry at the University of the Pacific in San Francisco, graduating in1980 and moving to St. Johns where he and Laurie raised their 6 children and where he built a successful dental practice. Dr. Platt served the community of St. Johns and the entire White Mountain area for over 40 years.He was known for his optimism, grateful demeanor, honesty in all he did and his generous and gentle nature. His unwavering testimony of His Savior Jesus Christ stands as a beacon to all who knew him.
Randy was preceded in death by his son, David, parents and 4 siblings, Gary, Rodney, Jeffrey and Julie.
He is survived by his wife, Laurie Platt and children, Chantel (Jody) Tenney, Tyler Platt, Christy (Jared) Raban, Angelique (Seth) Morgan, Taryn (Bryant) Jensen; 18 grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren. Of his many accomplishments he felt his greatest were his children and grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 30, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, St. Johns Downtown building, with visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow the services at the St. Johns Westside Cemetery.
