Eagar

Michael David Haynes, 70, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2026 in Eagar, Arizona. He was born January 6, 1956 in Saratoga Springs, New York, the son of Lewis Lester Haynes, Jr. and Mary Rose Benton.

Michael, also known as Uncle Mike and affectionately as “Turtle” was a man who lived for the outdoors and the simple joy of a shared laugh. A legendary small-space gardener with a thumb as green as the ribbons he brought home from the Apache County Fair, Turtle’s prize-winning pumpkins and ears of corn were a testament to his patience and hard work.

Mike was the ultimate architect of fun, whether he was meticulously designing a backyard mini-golf course or setting up “gallery” practice with his ever-present BB gun and plastic toy targets. To Turtle every gathering was an opportunity for an adventure and it was always “Beer Thirsty”, a philosophy that ensured the spirits were high and the stories were plenty.

A man of preparation, his friends will remember him as the one who was always ready; never once leaving a tool behind or letting a campfire go unlit. He found his peace in the open air – often found in the back of a pickup truck, riding down dirt roads to watch the leaves change. Whether the adventure was big or small, Uncle Mike made the most of every mile and every moment. He leaves behind a legacy of rigged-up golf holes, smoky campfires and a reminder to never turn down an invitation to explore.

Mike is survived by his brother, Lewis L. Haynes, III, sister, Elizabeth Ketring and sister-in-law, Vivian Haynes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Amilece Haynes, brother, Stephen Haynes, sister, Marion Richmond, and sister-in-law, Ann Haynes.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
