James Ellis Fowler, Jr. passed away Thursday, July 23, 2026 at his home in Eagar, Arizona. He was born on September 5, 1938 in Flagstaff, Arizona to James Ellis “E.J.” Fowler and Iona Elizabeth Swanner.

James spent his childhood moving throughout Arizona, attending 13 elementary schools, two high schools and one year of college. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Boat Electrician from September 24, 1957 to September 22, 1961. His military service reflected the dedication, discipline and strong work ethic that remained with him throughout his life.

Throughout his life family was at the center of everything James did. He was first married to Zetta Webb and together they welcomed two daughters. He later married Michelle Supernaw and they had one daughter. He found lasting companionship with Lola Renee Tillman, whom he married and was grateful to become the stepfather of her two sons. Whether by birth or by marriage, James loved his family deeply and treasured the time they spent together. He took great pride in watching his family grow through the generations and found his greatest joy in being surrounded by those he loved. His family knew him as a man of conviction, wisdom and unwavering love.

James' faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of his life. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he believed that the greatest measure of discipleship was serving God by serving others. Throughout his life he faithfully accepted many opportunities to serve, including as a High Priests Group Leader, working with the young men and serving as a temple ordinance worker. He served two missions at Deseret Ranch in Florida with his wife Renee, where they found great joy in laboring together and strengthening their testimonies. His favorite hymn, While of These Emblems We Partake, reflected the reverence he felt for the Savior and the covenants that guided his life. His quiet example of faith, service, integrity and devotion blessed his family and all who knew him.

James loved the outdoors and rarely passed up an opportunity to hunt or fish, whether the season agreed or not. He was a hardworking man with a strong personality, a quick wit and an unwavering confidence in his opinions. Those who knew him appreciated his honesty, determination and sense of humor. He was always willing to lend a hand to someone in need and spent his life in service to others.

James was a Heavy Equipment Operator and after retiring James fulfilled a lifelong dream by spending several years on the Alaskan frontier. There he enjoyed countless days hunting, but especially fishing; creating treasured memories with his beloved wife, Renee and many family members and friends. Those adventures became some of the happiest chapters of his life.

James is survived by his loving wife, Lola Renee Fowler, his daughters, Elizabeth Fowler, Lisa Meeks, Kimberly Hart, his stepson, Tim Rodgers, 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, E.J. Fowler, his mother, Iona Swanner, his first wife, Zetta Webb, his stepson, Stanley Rodgers Jr. and great-grandson, Aiden Peralta.

James will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his deep love for his family, his willingness to serve others and the many stories, lessons and laughter he shared throughout his life. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and in the example of faith, hard work, kindness and devotion he leaves behind.

A viewing will be held Thursday, July 30, 2026 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Burnham Mortuary, Eagar, A graveside service will be held Friday, July 31, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Eagar Cemetery.
